For those of you who are APC (Australian Personal Computer) Magazine readers, you might have already noticed that the new June 2004 issue (In newsagents this morning, I already grabbed my copy!) comes with a Debian Binary DVD.

The DVD was created by myself (Martin) along with a Source DVD (available upon request from APC at a small price to cover DVD manufacturing) and a quick installation guide (on pages 142-143) to get you up and running.

If you would like information on how the DVDs were created, then click here. Once the issue has finished circulation the DVD ISOs (both the Binary and Source DVD) will be available online (most likely via BitTorrent) for everyone to enjoy.

As far as I know, this is the first distro DVD to make it onto the front cover of APC Magazine, so as you can imagine I am quite proud of it.

If you would like to leave a comment, or ask a question please feel free to email me ( mayhem@linuxathome.net ), or post here in the forums.

Thnx :) I hacked up the readmes etc so it looked more authentic. Thought the addition of memtest was a good idea as I use it ALOT and it comes on the redhat distro cds.

Well done, top effort. I got a copy yesterday and read the article/guide but unfortunaly the machine I wanna try it on only has a cd drive. Any chance I could burn the bits I need of the dvd to cd (or multiple, I haven't looked at the size yet) or is it better to just download the cd image?

Edit: After reading how you made the dvd it sounds like it'd be better just to download each of the 7 cd images.

Hi,

I've had problems installing the debian distro from APC.

When it gets to the stage where it scans the disk, it appears to find the distros okay, but then says something about discarding them, and something about a W, and says it can't install anything.

My dvd drive is at /dev/hdd if that means anything.

I was not prompted during the installation about whether I wanted to scan the disk, which the instructions in APC said would happen.

I can be more specific about the error if you like, but is there any obvious workaround?

Thanks,

Alex

If I get a chance on the weekend I will play around and see if I can replicate the problem, or find a possible solution. Off the top of my head I can't think of anything.

What architecture is your PC? Just make sure that i386 will work on it.

My system is just a Pentium III, the dvd drive is a hitachi dvd-rom gd-7000, but I don't think that's the problem as it reads fine.

Cheers,

Alex

I have a PC with 512Mb Ram, AMD2400+ CPU on an MSI MS-6590 Mobo. My video card is an ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon 7500 series. My problem is the Distro goes all the way through the install, and then fails to run the XServer. I have tried to configure it manually, but it always comes back with an error stating it cannot find an ATI Mach64 on the AGP port. I think the problem is video card drivers, but as I am new to Linux, I am at a loss as to how to fix this problem. I can get Red Hat 9 and Knopix 3.3 to work (in varying levels of success), I have also got Xandros to work, but I would prefer to get Debian running if I could. :)

Hi there,
I just bought your June 2004 issue of apc magazine.
It comes with a dvd containing debian 3.0r2.
this is normally spread across a number of cds.

i do not have a dvd reader in my computer, however i have managed to connect my
xbox up to my computer and get all the files off the dvd onto my hard drive.
now i need to burn these files onto the cds they are normally on... how would i
go about doing this?
which files go on which cds?

is there any way?
or perhaps, is there somewhere in perth i can go and swap my debian 3.0rc2 dvd
for the cds that have the same thing?
thanx very much.

Hi All,

The Binary DVD and Source DVD are both now available again on the Linuxathome.net BitTorrent Tracker ( http://www.linuxathome.net/tracker/ ).

I am now running iiNet ADSL2 so upload bandwidth is considerably greater.

As for anyone trying to reverse engineer the DVD back to CD's, I am afraid your in for even more hard work than I was for creating it.

If you have the bandwidth just download the distro from your local ISP FTP, otherwise give me an email and I might be able to burn and snail mail them to you :)

Cheers,
Martin
