I am having trouble comprehending that this site even exists. I am planning on getting Optus@home, and using my Linux box, that I have already setup for firewall/IP Masquerading for dial-up, as the gateway server. However, I read that Optus@home bans the running of servers, and has supsended users to this effect, in the faq @ http://whirlpool.net.au.

Now I am worried, as Linux usually runs a number of services by default, which I would rather not turn-off. However, the existence of this site has given me hope. Can I assume that the existance of this site means that it is allowable, as well as possible?

Thanks,
Shaddy

Optus is more flexible (sort of) these days.. and as many of us already run Linux box's all I can say is that its fine.

From memory your allowed to run a server as long as your not running and HTTP. FTP, IRC etc servers from it.

I am pretty sure your allowed to share the internet to your local network, but not to anything major.

You would be best ringing Optus to find their most up-to-date policy.

But I assure you that I have never had a problem and I have been on Optus since day 1.

It is a good idea to disable any unnecessary servers anyway. In addition to that, you can also setup your firewall rules to block all incoming connection attempts, so that as far as the outside world is concerned, you are not not running anything.

Most of the services in Linux can be made to serv only to your internet lan, and not to optus.
