Post subject:  dial-in config help

Has anybody had success with setting up a dial in server??

I'm using pppd and mgetty and am about a the end of my tether. I've read over the man pages etc about a million times and have tried a million and one things...nothing seems to work.

Everytime the modems handshake then it gets to verifying username and password (client is w98) and the connections bombs out.

mgetty log extract of the failure:
10/23 14:08:06 yS0 utmp + wtmp entry made
10/23 14:08:06 yS0 tio_set_flow_control( HARD )
10/23 14:08:06 yS0 print welcome banner (/etc/issue)
10/23 14:08:06 yS0 getlogname (AUTO_PPP), read:
10/23 14:08:06 ##### failed dev=ttyS0, pid=3061, got signal 1, exiting

so obviously it's failing its attempt to get he login name. However no matter what i do with login settings this always happens.

Any ideas?? i'll the configs files if it helps

Cheers

Oct 24 11:26:34 golem pppd[4441]: Using interface ppp0
Oct 24 11:26:34 golem pppd[4441]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/0
Oct 24 11:27:04 golem pppd[4441]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Oct 24 11:27:04 golem pppd[4441]: Connection terminated.

so i'm working on this. Hopefully it wont take too long.
