Just wondering what everyone runs as a firewall and how they have found it?

At the moment I am running Firestarter with some custom scripts, its pretty good but it stuffs my ICQ file sends and IRC fservs (thats about the only problems).

Please do tell me about your 1337 firewall setups :)

IPTables and my own firewall script. Basically just allow a few ports that I use and DENY/DROP the rest.

Decided to go retro in the form of IPCHAINS

I know that it isn't exactly old, though it is what I know, and what the referance material that I have gatherd covers.

As far as the setup it is a simple cust script.

Yeah I had everything working nicely with a custom IPCHAINS script when I had Red Hat 6.2 installed.

Think I might do a full custom IPTABLES script when I get the time :)

/me displays obvious disliking of the way Red Hat will overcompletcate things in order to get the user to use their programs.

LRP / LEAF / eigerstein... 486 running off a floppy.
Can't praise it enough. Vastly more flexible than the little embedded linux firewall/router hardware solutions, safer too.

Tempted to upgrade to booting from a cdrom, but still battling the idea; the best thing with the floppy is small, simple, dedicated to one job only - traffic cop. Could upgrade to a pentium, but the 486 handles the throughput with ease and without the noise of a cpu fan. So if it ain't broke...

I am running red hat 8.2

I got a good script from the ip masquerading how-to,

It works very well lets al my programs access the internet but, if you want to access your linux externaly you have to open the ports. If you want a copy of it let me know
