Post subject:  IPTables - how to use?

Hi, I was wondering if anybody could help me with RH 7.3 and setting up a firewall/sharing the internet.

I have been trying to use firestarter, but the scripts it produces don't seem to work, I've been getting error messages such as:

/lib//modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_ables.o: insmod ip_tables fialed
iptables v1.2.5: can't initialize iptables table 'filter': iptables who?(do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

most scripts I've been using to share the internet produce exactly the same error message. Please explain?? :)

thanks!!

it's because rh7.3 loads ipchains by default. there are several ways to stop ipchains from loading....ntsysv, service configuration (in the control panel), chkconfig, setup (i think setup still works in 7.3).

whatever method you use, stop ipchains from loading in the runlevel you're at.

btw, this is just an error message....i've found that iptables still loads and firestarter works.

hth. :)
