NewsForge Reviews Excel Clone for Linux Posted Sunday, June 27, 2004 @ 9:24 AM by mayhem
NewsForge has a glowing review about PlanMaker for Linux, a new spreadsheet for Linux that is much more compatible with Microsoft Excel than the competition and speedier, too. PlanMaker has Excel-compatible charting and AutoShapes and reads and writes any Excel file you throw at it. Here is a chart comparing Excel, OpenOffice.org, and PlanMaker. (Source: Slashdot)

APC Debian Woody 3.0r2 i386 DVDs - Follow Up Posted Thursday, June 24, 2004 @ 10:07 PM by mayhem
Well its been over a month since the June issue of APC Maganzine went on sale with my Debian Woody 3.0r2 i386 DVD on the cover. In that time I have been quite flooded with emails about it (both congratulations and questions). While I hope that I have replied to them all I am sorry to those for which I haven't been able to solve your problems (I just haven't have the time lately to trouble shoot as much as I would like to be able too).

The DVD seemed to make a good impression on people and responses have been favourable, here are just a few I have found:
  • http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=199792&p=-1
  • http://mail.plug.linux.org.au/pipermail/plug/2004-May/053320.html
  • http://www.debian.or.jp/diary/?2004052&to=200405226

As of the 19th of July 2004 it will be possible to release the ISO's for both the Binary and Source DVD's online. Its now really just a matter of setting up the torrents (either on a Linuxathome tracker or another reliable tracker), so keep checking back for more details.

SETI@Home Transitions To BOINC Posted Thursday, June 24, 2004 @ 9:43 PM by mayhem
The team at SETI@Home have finally released their highly-anticipated new client software based on the BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) software platform. This new platform promises transparent version upgrades, more efficient work unit distribution, and the ability to seamlessly integrate other distributed computing projects that are also using the BOINC standard. For now, SETI@Home is allowing both the Classic and BOINC clients to run, but eventually they will shut down the Classic data server and force everyone to upgrade. You can read more about the transition here. (Source: Slashdot)

Slackware 10.0 Officially Released Posted Thursday, June 24, 2004 @ 9:31 PM by mayhem
Slackware 10.0 is out! X.org 6.7.0, kernel 2.4.26 (2.6.7 optional), KDE 3.2.3, GNOME 2.6.1, GCC 3.3.4... it's all new, and just as stable as you'd expect from Slackware, if RC2 was any indication. There's an official announcement, as well as some ISO BitTorrent links, and a mirror list. Of course, the non-cheapskates among us should go buy the CD-set to support the project. Have fun, everybody... (Source: Slashdot)
